The Center hosted a discussion with Lieutenant General Remigijus Baltrėnas, Director General of the NATO International Military Staff. The discussion focused on key developments within NATO and the broader security situation in the region. The event was moderated by Vytautas Leškevičius, GSSC Chief Foreign Policy Advisor.

NATO’s different flanks face different threats — but these differences do not have to be a source of division within the Alliance. They can instead become a strength, allowing Allies to build on regional expertise, capabilities and leadership while maintaining political solidarity.

On September 21, during the High-Level Week of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the Geopolitics and Security Studies Center brought together high-level political, diplomatic, security, and business representatives from the Baltic states and the United States to discuss shared security challenges, the future of transatlantic cooperation, and the resilience of the Baltic region.

The Geopolitics and Security Studies Center together with the Polish Institute of International Affairs (PISM), held a seminar titled “Strengthening Baltic Security: Addressing Russian Hybrid Threats and the Shadow Fleet Challenge.” During the event, experts discussed Russia’s hybrid activities in the Baltic Sea region, the security threats they pose, and the role of Russia’s shadow fleet in circumventing Western sanctions.

The Geopolitics and Security Studies Center welcomed Mikael Frisell, Director General of the Swedish Civil Defence and Resilience Agency. During the discussion, we explored Sweden’s total defence model, the strengthening of civil defence, and society’s preparedness to operate in an increasingly complex security environment. The discussion was moderated by the Center’s Chief Project Manager, dr. Juljan Jachovič.

The Centre hosted a discussion on the latest developments in Ukraine. The GSSC Director Linas Kojala and Associate Expert, retired Colonel Gintaras Bagdonas, took part in the discussion following their return from a visit to Ukraine yesterday. The discussion was moderated by the Center’s Project Manager, Dominykas Nedzinskas.

The Geopolitics and Security Studies Center, together with its partners at the European Policy Institute in Kyiv (EPIK), held a roundtable discussion on how the Baltic States should prepare for a potential Russian military build-up and possible escalation on NATO’s Eastern Flank.

The Geopolitics and Security Studies Center welcomed Moldova’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mihai Popșoi.

GSSC Director Linas Kojala, in an interview with TVP World given on the sidelines of the Impact Leading Mindsconference in Warsaw, discussed Russia’s increasingly frequent hybrid activities in Europe, the credibility of NATO deterrence, and the need for the West to respond more firmly to Moscow’s actions.

On 31 August 1993, at 11:46 p.m., the last Russian military units left Lithuanian territory, completing the withdrawal of the occupying army from Lithuania.
