On July 10, GSSC concluded its summer event season with a discussion titled “Strategic Partnership: Lithuania-France Dialogue in Europe.” The event featured Lithuania’s Ambassador to France, Arnoldas Pranckevičius, and was moderated by the Center’s director, Linas Kojala.

Main Topics Discussed:

  • Lithuania-France Relations: The discussion highlighted the close cooperation between Lithuania and France in the fields of security, innovation, and culture. The Ambassador emphasized that both countries often align on key foreign policy issues, especially regarding support for Ukraine.
  • Support for Ukraine: Participants discussed France’s role in supporting Ukraine both diplomatically and practically. The close cooperation between the presidents of both countries and their consistent stance on Russia’s aggression was underscored.
  • French Domestic Politics: The conversation addressed the political situation in France, noting growing political instability, a strengthening political center, and the rise of radical parties.
  • Economy and Defense: The discussion covered France’s economic challenges, national debt, and priorities in increasing defense funding. It was noted that, even under difficult circumstances, France maintains a strong system of science, healthcare, and education.
  • EU Strategic Autonomy: After Donald Trump’s presidency, the need for Europe to strengthen its autonomy in defense and reduce dependence on the United States became more apparent.
  • Cultural Ties: The vibrant activity of Lithuanian creators in France was presented, with special mention of the contributions of Litvaks, Antanas Mončys, Vytautas Kasiulis, and Kazimieras Varnelis, which have attracted significant interest from the French public.

After the official discussion, an informal picnic took place, during which the Lithuanian and European Union flags were ceremoniously replaced. This symbolic gesture, attended by a large number of distinguished guests, created a special atmosphere and concluded the event season with a warm sense of community.
