Today, the Center for Geopolitical and Security Studies, GSSC (formerly the Eastern European Studies Center), held a virtual discussion on the political situation in Georgia. The event featured Lithuanian Ambassador to Georgia Darius Vitkauskas and Deputy Director of the Georgian Institute of Politics Renata Skardžiūtė-Kereselidze, with RESC project assistant Donata Ketlerytė moderating the session.

Key Points from the Discussion

  • The discussion addressed the political, legal, and social crisis currently unfolding in Georgia.

  • Ambassador Darius Vitkauskas emphasized that, although protests in the country are intensifying, they have not yet reached a tipping point; however, the situation could change in the coming weeks or months.

  • He also highlighted that, while Western countries express verbal support, Georgians expect more decisive actions. Some EU member states are considering following the Baltic States’ example by imposing sanctions on Georgian officials to pressure the current government.

Renata Skardžiūtė-Kereselidze’s Insights

  • She noted that the protests have become an extraordinary phenomenon that may determine Georgia’s future.

  • According to her, dissatisfaction is rising not only among opposition supporters but also among voters of the “Georgian Dream” party.

  • Despite growing civic resistance, experts believe that protesters lack a clear political message that could further unite society and strengthen the movement.

  • She also pointed out the lack of global media engagement and mentioned that representatives from Western media are still expected to arrive.

Analysis of Russian Influence

  • Participants also analyzed Russia’s influence and the actions of the authorities, which, according to experts, are heavily affected by Moscow’s strategies.

  • Nevertheless, as Renata Skardžiūtė-Kereselidze stressed, Georgian society hopes for more active support from Western democratic countries, as this is not only a matter of national security but also of a European future.
