On June 26, the Center for Geopolitical and Security Studies hosted a discussion with CEPA visiting fellow and former ambassador Eitvydas Bajarūnas.
Key Topics Addressed:
- Political and Societal Transformations in the U.S.:
The discussion focused on the ongoing political and societal changes in the United States, particularly in the context of Donald Trump’s return to the political arena. It was emphasized that Trump is not an isolated phenomenon but rather a manifestation of deeper social changes—he represents voters affected by globalization who oppose the elite, migration, and cultural shifts. Trump’s communication is characterized by simple language, extensive use of social media, and a constant conflict with the press. - Trump’s Approach to Security Policy and Allies:
The event analyzed Trump’s perspective on security policy and alliances. It was highlighted that his decision-making is individualistic and often based on personal sympathies. Doubts about NATO’s usefulness, the reliability of partners, and U.S. military commitments abroad raise concerns about the future of transatlantic cohesion. The role of Congress is diminishing, with decisions increasingly made at the discretion of a single individual. - Economic Policy and Domestic Polarization:
Trump’s economic policies—such as the implementation of tariffs, efforts to reduce the trade deficit, and the drive to lessen bureaucratic burdens—were also discussed. The fate of sanctions regimes, the potential decrease in aid to Ukraine, and growing polarization within American society were key points. Trump’s rhetoric, the spread of conspiracy theories, and criticism of the media reflect broader shifts in U.S. political culture.
Conclusions:
At the end of the discussion, it was stressed that American society will not return to the “old normal,” and Trump embodies fundamental changes within it. For Lithuania, understanding these processes is crucial, as the development of transatlantic security, Europe’s ability to respond to changes in U.S. policy, and the stability of the overall security architecture depend on them.
