The Geopolitics and Security Studies Center hosted an online discussion dedicated to presenting its publication on conscription systems in the Baltic Sea region. During the event, the publication’s authors, Fredrik Weibull and Karl Yden, discussed different conscription models, their applicability in today’s security environment, and opportunities to strengthen national defence capabilities.
The discussion examined how different European countries organise military service, the factors that shape efforts to expand armed forces, and the infrastructure, personnel, and training challenges involved in increasing the number of trained soldiers. Particular attention was given to the experiences of Sweden and Finland and the lessons they may offer to other countries in the region.
The presentation also explored how the changing character of warfare is prompting a reassessment of traditional military training models. According to the authors, modern armed forces should not only train infantry soldiers but also foster technological and innovation-related competencies that are becoming increasingly important in contemporary conflicts.
