European countries should act in line with their core security interests. The main priority is to preserve U.S. engagement in Europe’s security architecture, as after many years of underinvestment in defense, there is no real alternative.

Europe needs not only more action, but also a clearer public posture. The war in Iran shows that the United States needs Europe, including Ramstein Air Base in Germany and other logistics hubs. Therefore, the narrative that Europe is merely a burden for Washington simply does not reflect reality.

European countries know how to say “no,” but are less effective at putting forward their own plan. That is exactly what is needed now – not only to distance themselves, but also to offer practical solutions that serve Europe’s interests. France’s effort to build a coalition that could help ensure security in the Strait of Hormuz after the end of active hostilities is a good example.
