On May 30, the GSSC hosted a discussion on the prospects for European security and the challenges of strengthening defense. The event featured EU Commissioner Andrius Kubilius and Deputy Minister of National Defence Tomas Godliauskas.
During the discussion, A. Kubilius presented his comprehensive vision of the “Pax Europaea” principle and the strengthening of European independence in the field of security, drawing on the latest insights from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s speech. The conversation addressed changes in the U.S. military presence in Europe, threats posed by Russian military capabilities, the need to reinforce NATO’s defense capacities, and the long-term consequences of the war in Ukraine for Europe.
The speaker emphasized that Europe must prepare for more active Russian actions in the coming years and that effective defense is impossible without a strong military industry and innovative technologies such as drones. The event also analyzed strategies for the development of Europe’s defense industry, reducing bureaucratic barriers, creating joint procurement systems, and strengthening defense infrastructure in the Baltic region by leveraging Ukraine’s experience.
The discussion highlighted the necessity to coordinate regional actions, strengthen institutional capacities, and rapidly adapt to new technologies to ensure effective defense of the Baltic States and preparedness for potential future challenges.
